Specialist Plants, Quality Service

In 2004, Tim and Ruth Penrose purchased a specialised hosta hobby business from Ruth's parents, Ann and Roger Bowden. With a vision to expand focussing on specialist plants and quality service, they have added small but excellent plant nurseries to the Bowdens family - all national or even world leaders in their chosen field! Bowdens Nursery now consists of four main brands, representing a total of 129 RHS gold medals, and hundreds of years of expertise and experience.

Bowdens Show Gardens

We exhibit at a range of recognised garden shows including RHS Chelsea Flower Show and the RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival. We’ve won a host of medals for our gardens, endeavouring to show off the beauty of hostas, ferns, bamboos, and agapanthus.

Plants of Garden Merit

Since 1922, the Royal Horticultural Society has annually bestowed the Award of Garden Merit on plants that have been performance tested for United Kingdom growing conditions. Bowdens have available numerous plants which have received this award.

Bowdens is home to an acre of mature garden and a whole host of beautiful plants. You can see our National Collection of Hostas (Halcyon and sports) and Agapanthus (Pine Cottage cultivars) and spend a peaceful hour in tranquil surroundings.
