Visit Our Unique Gardens

in Devon

We welcome visitors, whether by carload or by coach load! The gardens are open to the public from the beginning of April to the end of September, weekdays and Saturdays, 10am to 4pm.

Visits outside these times are possible, but please call us before making a special trip. There is no charge for a standard visit, only for our special toursThe hostas are up from late April or early May, appearing in their best finery until late July. Then they start to look slightly less fresh. The Agapanthus are flowering July, August, and into early September (and let's be honest, they're not much to look at when they're not in flower!)

National Hosta and Agapanthus Collections

Bowdens are proud to host two National Collections:

  • The National Collection of Hostas - 'Halcyon' and Sports
  • The National Collection of Agapanthus - Pine Cottage Cultivars

This unique garden was established by Roger and Ann Bowden in the 1990s on land adjacent to our Sticklepath nursery. After collecting hostas for many years, they were awarded a National Collection of Modern Hybrid Hostas by Plant Heritage – the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens.

Gardening Talks

If you can’t make it to us, we’ll come to you! We are always delighted to be asked to speak at a local club. Peter Savage is entertaining and generates great enthusiasm about hostas, ferns, and other plants. This includes how to show them at their best and exactly what is involved in running a prestigious plant nursery.

Sessions will feature an entertaining talk and may include plants for sale, an excellent slideshow including the design and build of gold medal winning displays, and an always popular question and answer session. Guests will enter a prize draw when they sign up to receive our special offers by email.

To arrange a talk or enquire about fees for your location, please email talks@bowdensnursery.com or call Bowdens on 01837 849367. If you aren't local to the west country, never fear, Peter will happily do an online talk for you.

The 1892 book Ferns and Fern Culture is sometimes referenced in our talks. It is available here as a free eBook download.

Once you get the bug however it’s clearthere is a world of lush green plants that can be enjoyed in our gardens -especially now that our climate is changing. Thank you for debunking the mythsthat I and I’m sure others held about needing lots of shade, which means I canhead over to your online shop to start exploring them more this summer."
